Mike Stein is a documentary and fine art photographer with an interest in urban themes, history and architecture. Born and raised in Brooklyn, his native turf is familiar yet mysterious to him and is one of his favorite subjects. Author Thomas Wolfe wrote a short story in 1937 called Only the Dead Know Brooklyn. Although it may be true, Mike has not given up trying.
As a newspaper staff photographer and editor, he shot 25,000 frames of Brooklyn life in the 1980s, concentrating on the massive changes occurring in the older precincts of the borough. His unique archive of those times has been distilled into a book, BROOKLYN ON THE BRINK: Winds of Change in the Eighties. A selection of this work has been exhibited at several galleries and arts organizations including the Henry Street Settlement and Soho Photo Gallery, both in New York City, and the Brooklyn Public Library Central Library at Grand Army Plaza.
Mike majored in studio art and art history at the State University of New York at Albany and received a Master of Fine Arts in documentary photography from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
He is also a transportation industry professional who has been a taxi driver and chauffeur in New York City, an owner of a suburban limousine fleet, and a shareholder in black car companies. He's on the move a lot and of course is always with a camera or two, observing the scene. Mike and his family live in Suffolk County, Long Island.
