Travels with Jim

by Jill Evans

Book cover

Jim's a loner. At 23, he's never had a real home, and he's spent the last eight years of his life train hopping from coast to coast chasing the ghost of a father he's never met. The only irreplaceable thing Jim owns is a copy of his father's poetry book. But Jim's severely dyslexic and can't read. Hope comes in the form of an 18-year-old girl named Sorrie, a runaway seeking a new life with her relatives in Nebraska. Jim agrees to take her on one condition—she reads the book to him.

Set in 1993, Travels with Jim, explores the romanticism of the road, the grittiness of life on the edge, and the hopes of two people discovering why caring for each other can be more important than freedom.

Twin Marines in Hell: From Grade School to Vietnam

by Jerry Byrne

Book cover

There are thousands of books written about Vietnam, but not necessarily about twins in Marine Corps boot camp and Vietnam at the same time. This book is history, but it is not a history book. It is a story as I remembered Vietnam and the hardship of being a grunt in the Marine Corps. The story highlights growing up as twins in New York City and joining the Marines together. My brother John's life was taken away at an early age of 58 years old. He died from Agent orange—a toxic chemical produced by greedy corporations and sprayed in Vietnam. Many Americans were exposed to this chemical while fighting in Vietnam and are still dying from cancer from it today.
