Dennis Carey is a resident of Long Beach, New York. Growing up, he was an avid ocean swimmer and started surfing in 1964 on a secondhand board. (He still surfs on a Robert August longboard on Lafayette or Washington beach in Long Beach.)

As a teen, he was a beachcomber and then lifeguard through college and medical school before embarking on a career in pediatric endocrinology. (He temporarily dropped out of a pre-med program to consider a career as a college English professor.)

His interest in American and World History has been lifelong. He was drawn to the world of historical fiction with one of his earliest favorite works being Gore Vidal's Burr. Other admired writers are Doris Kearns Goodwin, Caleb Carr, Michael Shaara, and especially, Edward Rutherford. For relaxation, he has enjoyed the fun writings of Jimmy Buffet and Clive Cussler, and loved A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

Silver Strand: The Long Beach Saga is his first published work, although he has written a private family history (as historical fiction) entitled Brownstone Ceilidh: A Family Portrait, based on ten hours of interviews with his mother, Geraldine McCarthy Carey.

Dr. Carey has published over 40 academic articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters in the fields of pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology. Future works may include the story of the 6-month, 30,000-mile cross-country sabbatical he and his wife Barbara took in their orange VW Kombi during the 1976 bicentennial year.

He also is considering writing children's books emphasizing the field of endocrinology.
